Oil — type more important than “brand”

Dear Doctor: I always read your column and I am very curious bout the “recommended” oil brand by the various carmakers. Why do they sometimes recommend one brand of oil? Jake

Dear Jake: I own a few different vehicles, and each one of my cars also has a recommendation for a particular oil brand. I advise my customers of this: Oil manufacturers give automakers a great price on the oil and figure with factory endorsement car owners will likely use that brand. I use multiple oil brands. As long as you are using the recommended “type” of oil that meets or exceeds what the factory recommends your warranty will not be void, regardless of what “brand” you are using.
