2004 Nissan Altima tight when making turns

Dear Doctor: I own a 2004 Nissan Altima four-cylinder with 46,000 miles. About a week ago, I felt a tightness and stiffness when making turns. The dealer looked at it, and they found nothing wrong, I continue to feel the same tightness in the turns with my hands having to grip the steering wheel tighter than usual. I had a power steering flush at 43,000 miles. What could be causing this turning trouble? Elliott

Dear Elliott: The power steering fluid flush would not have any affect on this issue. If the power steering belt were slipping then you would hear the squealing sound. Seldom is there a power steering pump or power steering rack failure with tight front-end moving parts. The tightness you mention can be caused from the steering shaft universal joint, which is often overlooked.
