2002 Cadillac DeVille leaking oil

Dear Doctor: I have a 2002 Cadillac DeVille with the Northstar V-8 engine and 45,000 miles. I have it serviced every 3,000 miles for an oil change and filter. Twice during this time period the instrument panel came on and told me to check the oil level. I added a quart of oil to feel safe that nothing would happen to the engine. I’m not driving it hard and not putting any stress on the car. Why should I have to add extra oil after the oil change? Thomas

Dear Thomas: The Cadillac Northstar V-8 is known for blowing head gaskets, leaking oil and burning oil. It is not your fault the engine uses oil. I have switched many of my Cadillac customers to high-mileage oil, as it does slow the oil usage. I would not waste the money on synthetic oil on an engine that leaks and burns oil. As far as repairing the leaking, it’s an expensive repair. — Junior Damato, Motor Matters
