2001 Dodge Caravan transmission makes thud sound

Dear Doctor: My wife has a 2001 Dodge Caravan that has 118,000 miles on it. Recently, the transmission started making a thud sound when slowing down. As soon as it drops to 25 mph there is a thump sound and a slight jerk. Does it have anything to do with the torque converter? William

Dear William: The thud sound you hear and feel is the transmission actually downshifting into a lower gear. The transmission is electronically controlled. A check of trouble fault codes will reveal the circuit or solenoid fault. Use the correct transmission fluid — it is a must.
